Parrot doodles

I was in London recently for my classes master exhibition in Framestore. It was a great weekend and amazing seeing everyone again. But during the course of the weekend i was chilling out in a park just listening to music and probably doodleing a little. When suddenly this old woman walked by with too very dark blue parrots on her shoulders. I was completely dumb stuck and though this was the coolest thing.

So i started to doodle some roughs today over a coffee. Hopefully i'll get some sort of finished looking piece together but that might be unlikely cause my photoshop has run out of free days. Sad panda :( . So maybe this is all you'll get of these.

These are for a mate because i was telling her the story and somewhere along the lines i said i'd draw them. Actually check out her little blog. She is in the process of making her grad film which is looking very nice . Lynne's Blog

I saw a deadly little mickey mouse pose today on some blog done by Fred Moore. REally liked it so i decided to copy it for the craic.

This was a little warm up doodle i did as part of some prep for a drawing i was doing for the RHA/National land trust or something along those lines. It was pretty cool. gotta draw over a robert balla painting which was pretty slick.

Software : Autodesks Softimage|XSI, Mud box, Adobe Master collection CS5 , Nuke , Python and Pftrack. The back plate footage is all shot on a Canon 550D with the stock 18-55mm lens at dublin’s IFSC.

My Masters film

So this is my masters film from a year spent at the Ncca in Bournemouth University. Its all done and i'm very happy with it. It took 12weeks from preproduction to Hand in. I learnt so much on this project it was insane. Basically had to learn how to do everything from scratch.

Its all made in Xsi , comped in nuke and edited together using Adobe premiere. The back plate stuff is all shot on a Canon 550D with the stock 18-55mm lens. Then it was tracked in PFtrack.

Basically the main reason i made this was to try something that i could never animate with a pencil. I really wanted to try and push myself and see what i could do with 3d.

A quick Rig test of my character. No animation yet. Don't have time yet (Sad Panda) . I gotta learn how to track first. Hopefully i'll have some stuff to start animating over by next week. Once i start animating i'll try and post stuff once a week to hopefully get you guys to give feedback.

This is just a edit of my backplates with music by a mate of mine called Steve McEvoy. A really cool musician from Dublin. Check out his band Data Drip .

A bit more concept for my Master project. Good or bad Let me know what you like or dislike. Some of these drawing are brand knew and some are old ones from doodle books that I liked the feel of. None of these drawing are necessarily good, I'm just going for feel at the moment.

Basic project outline_

I want to create a short animated piece of cartoony style character animation of a character doing flat land BMX style tricks. The animation is also going to be based in real world environments which will have cinematography based on the style of BMX videos. The aim of the piece is to recreate the ballet style movement of this discipline of BMX riding for the piece

Head space has been nominated for a ifta. This is amazing new for me. It makes me so happy that people are seeing the film and are also appreciating the amazing work and talent of Barley films. International Premiere of Headspace in Spain

A film I directed "Headspace" will have its first international screening at ANIMADRID International Festival of the Animated Image of Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, Spain, which runs from September 23rd to October 1st, 2010.

So if your in the area pop along and check out some really cool shorts. Some of the other shorts that will be screening at the festival from Barley Films are "Agricultural Report", "The Rooster, the Crocodile and the Night Sky", "Charred and Feathered", "The Red Ball" which are all worth a watch.

Hopefully some art work soon i just don't have a scanner at the moment but once i do some ink drawing will be up.

I got into a masters program in Bournemouth university. So come Sept I will be starting to learn 3d animation. Can't wait.

Oh other news, The short shorts I directed in Barley films called Head Space is having its first big public screening in the Galway Film Fleadh. So I hope all you kids can make it along.Can't wait to see it on the big screen, I'll be a very proud Patrick on that day let me tell ya.

I think about 25 years ago there was a mad explosion of post cards showing off Ireland but they were all a very romantic idea of what Ireland was, such as little ginger freckly kids on bogs and mountains. I always though these where complete crap and though it would be really funny if they where redone for todays time because it would be some chubby little kid sitting out side a chipper or a couple of drunk messes falling asleep in Mac Donald's. They might not sell tho.

Back in the day when there was still Eamon Doran's in Dublin they use to do a 3 euro drinks night , it was pretty great especially since i was in college, which ment i was broke a lot. Plus there was pretty good live music sometimes. Any way this is a little mock up Flyer thing. This is a bit of a work in progress thingy , i was trying something in the illustration vain of things. if i get my scanner working hopefully i will finish it cause the way i want the character to be is a little hard for me to draw straight into the computer. Its weird give me a piece of paper and pencil and i feel comfortable by put me in front of a computer with a Wacom and i don't know how to relax. Anyway enough rambling.

Any way here is another one, please don't mind this horrible drawing cause once again i'm planning on drawing it again (and hopefully better) on paper and then scanning the drawing and then doing a few photoshop things to it.

Since I've been snowed into my house for the last couple of days i decided to make the most of by venturing outside and taking some photos of the great outdoors.I played with the images a little i Photoshop just to make them a little crisper, Also turned most of them into grey scale and i cropped them to a letterbox shape cause i like compositions in that shape. During the summer i got a chance to do an internship with the lads and lasses in Cartoon Saloon. During that time the city of kilkenny had a heritage week and this amazing man called Eddie lenihan was telling storys. he is the most awesome person to watch cause he is so animated and lively . if your ever stuck so a hand pose or anything along those lines you should check this guy out on the old you tube. Later i found out that Tomm Moore was thinking of basing a character around this chap , when i saw some of the concept on his blog yesterday i got all inspired again. this is some of the results .

this design is heavley based on tomm's idea and this was all just for fun and not for anything else.

This is a little doodle i did for a mate for his birthday. I normal don't give my own drawnings as presents cause I'm never that happy with them. But for now I'm pretty happy with this and it got a cool reception at the party so i was very happy. It was also pretty fun to draw.

I'm going to animate professor monkey to this months 11 sec club sound file, unfortunately i won't have it started by the deadline for it but i still like the sound clip and the character. Also i have never done a lip sync before or at least finished one so i think i had better learn. it looks all fancy and stuff in your show reel .

hope you enjoy this guy he's a bit of fun, and i also worked out how to draw him and really push the expression on him. this drawing was done in TV paint.

Faith-Short film

A couple of friends and i are going to start making a short film soon enough. this is a little of the first concept for the film that we have done so far. The project will be made in 3d which is a completely new area for me to venture into which is really cool. There is three of us working on it, Phil King wh0 will be mainly modeling cause he just a wizz at it, Pete Williams who will be modeling and doing the production design and I'll be animating. So far it has been very much everyone's film and its really cool cause we are not sure what way we want it to go so there is a lot of cool ideas floating around.

Edit: I just realized that i haven't given full credit to the influences of this design. I was trying to take elements from the designs of Barry Reynolds,Jean Baptiste Van damme, Tomm Moore along with design ideas that are in Disney character plus my own little things that i like to add. Just want to mention this in case any one looks at this blog and thinks that I'm stealing. I just been looking at a lot of these guys art work and its coming through in my drawing at the moment or at least it is in my eyes. This is just a personal project for my own development in the area of animation not design it's also not for commercial purposes of any kind.

Monkey Scribble Test Animation

I hope you guys can forgive the shitty consistency in the model but I was more worried about the movement and thus volumes and such were not the first priority. But so far there is all the extremes and about 95% of the break down and plus a bit of straight ahead in places.I should have a tie down some time this week but I can't promise that cause if I did i know i won't have it by then.

As always please crit this to bits. Oh i tried not to take reference from the James Baxter monkey in the lion king cause i didn't want people to compare it to that master piece. But i think bits and pieces crept in anyway like in the hand movements.

This is an illustration that I'm thinking of showing in the kilkenny arts week. I have never shown anything before so this is a big deal for me. At the same time this illustration has given me an idea for a short film so i think I'm going to spend a little time and come up with a script for that. Hopefully it could get made. I was thinking that I would try and make it look like this illustration but have the whole project in 3d. It might be a nice contrast.

As you can see he is the same character as below but a slightly different design.I just wasn't mad about the whole priest costume so I changed his cloths a little to suit what I wanted.
